(Adnkronos) – For the first time, Thailand confirms civilian casualties due to the new escalation on the border with Cambodia. Three civilians were killed in the clashes, said Thai Defense Ministry spokesman Surasant Kongsiri to The Nation newspaper. Nine soldiers died, according to the updated toll provided by the spokesman, while clashes continued today in the border region between the two countries and accusations were exchanged.
Cambodia’s Interior Ministry confirmed that ten civilians were killed and 60 injured. The Cambodian government has requested the intervention of the United Nations Security Council. In a letter, the ambassador to the UN urged for “an immediate cessation of all attacks” and an independent mission to ascertain the facts. Cambodia accuses Thailand of “violations of international humanitarian law.” Thai military personnel reject the accusations.
