Unesco green light for Italian cuisine ‘a truly great success for Italy’

10 Dicembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Foreign minister Antonio Tajani on Wednesday hailed the addition of Italian cooking to a Unesco heritage list as “a truly great success for Italy” and “recognition of the whole of Mediterranean cuisine”.

“This is a truly a great success for Italy, and recognition for the whole of Mediterranean cuisine,” Tajani told Italy’s public broadcaster Rai’s Tg2 news bulletin from New Delhi, where he attended the Unesco panel meeting.

“The culture, identity and history of Italian traditions are increasingly recognised around the world. We are all proud and delighted to have flown the flag,” Tajani went on.

Unesco’s listing of Italian cookery as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is “an important outcome for cuisine but also for exports, culture, agrifood and many other sectors – and even for health,” he said.

Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni also hailed the result in a videomessage.

“This achievement makes us proud and gives us a powerful tool to further enhance our products and protect them more effectively from imitations and unfair competition,” Meloni stated.
