(Adnkronos) – The Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group claims control of the city of Uvira, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, not far from the border with Burundi. “We confirm that the city of Uvira has been liberated. We ask our compatriots to resume activities with the utmost serenity,” states the Afc/M23 in a note released on X, asserting that the group is “present to ensure their protection.” “We invite those who have fled to return to their homes,” they add.

According to sources cited by the Congolese broadcaster ‘Radio Okapi’, the rebels took control of Uvira after the military withdrew from the area. They then reportedly advanced towards Kavinvira.
