(Adnkronos) – Six Islamabad soldiers were killed and four others were injured in an attack carried out by Pakistani Taliban against a checkpoint on the border with Afghanistan, in northwestern Pakistan. Local authorities reported this, describing an assault by dozens of armed men against a checkpoint in the tribal district of Kurram, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, with a consequent violent firefight in which two militants also lost their lives.
The Pakistani Taliban, or Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), have long been active in the region and claimed responsibility for the attack. Pakistan accuses the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan of harboring TTP militants and allowing them to launch cross-border attacks from there, an accusation Kabul denies. The border between the two countries had been closed after clashes in October, but last week Pakistan announced that it would allow the passage of United Nations humanitarian aid into Afghanistan.
