(Adnkronos) – United States president Donald Trump covets the Nobel peace prize and has “the personal motivation” to get Ukraine and Russia to sign a US-drafted peace deal to end their 45-month-old war, Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday.
“I have great confidence in Trump’s actions to resolve the conflict in Ukraine…in his determination,” Tajani said at an event in Rome to mark the 75th anniversary of news agency AGI.
“As is well-known, the US president wants to win the Nobel Peace Prize…he is ambitious, and I am convinced that personal motivation can be decisive in such cases,” Tajani continued.
“Trump will do everything he can to convince the Russians and Ukrainians to accept his offers,” he said.
Europe “cannot fail to be involved (in negotiations on a final peace settlement), Tajani said.
“I want to be very clear on this,” Tajani underlined.
Italy “is not at war with Russia – we have only condemned Moscow’s aggression,” Tajani added, referring to Russia’s full-scale military invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which followed its occupation of Crimea in 2014.
“We have always helped Ukraine to defend itself without ever authorising the use of Italian weapons on Russian territory,” said Tajani.
