US: National Guardsmen shootings in Washington DC ‘sadden’ Italy

27 Novembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy has sent commiserations over the shooting in the US capital Washington DC on Thursday which left two US National Guardsmen fighting for their lives after the attack near the White House.

“Min. @Antonio_Tajani is saddened to learn of the shooting in #Washington,” the foreign ministry wrote on X late on Wednesday.

“He extends his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and expresses his solidarity with the American people.

An Afghan suspect, who was also shot during the attack, is in custody.

Reports named the suspect as 29-year old male who entered the US with his family in 2021 through the Biden adminstration’s Operation Allies Welcome programme, which evacuated and resettled tens of thousands of Afghans after the US withdrawal from the Taliban-ruled country.

The suspects was granted asylum in April 2025 under the Trump administration, US media reported, citing law enforcement sources.

Trump called the shooting “an act of evil”, has vowed an immigration crackdown in its wake and his administration has asked for an extra 500 Nation Guard troops to be deployed the US capital.
