Japan Supermarket Sales Up 2 Pct in Oct.

27 Novembre 2025

Tokyo, Nov. 27 (Jiji Press)–Supermarket sales in Japan rose 2.0 pct in October from a year earlier on a same-store basis, marking the eighth consecutive month of increase, according to industry data. Sales increased after manufacturers raised product prices, although the number of items purchased continued to decline as more customers became budget-conscious. All-store sales totaled 1,033.5 billion yen, the Japan Chain Stores Association said Wednesday. Food sales climbed 1.5 pct due to price hikes as well as rising prices of eggs and rice. Clothing sales rose 0.1 pct, driven by strong demand for winter apparel, while suit sales were weak. Sales of home-related products fell 1.8 pct. Akio Masuda, a senior official of the association, said at a press conference that people tend to avoid buying unnecessary items to save money and purchase essentials in bulk on special sales days.
