(Adnkronos) – US authorities have arrested the mother of Karoline Leavitt’s nephew, the White House spokesperson, as part of the new immigration crackdown desired by the Donald Trump administration. The woman, Bruna Caroline Ferreira, was stopped in Revere, Massachusetts, and is currently in an ICE detention center in South Louisiana: according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), she allegedly remained in the United States with a tourist visa that expired in 1999 and is reportedly involved in a suspected assault case. Sources tell NBC that the woman now faces deportation. Leavitt, questioned by various media outlets – including Boston University’s broadcaster (Wbur), which revealed the news – has not yet released any comments.
Authorities specify that Ferreira has never lived with her son, who has resided since birth in New Hampshire with his father Michael, the spokesperson’s older brother. The woman, however, claims to have arrived in the United States as a child in 1998 and to have benefited from the ‘Daca’ program, which protects those who entered the country as minors without documents. A DHS spokesperson, however, recalled that such protection can be revoked in the event of crimes: an element that, according to authorities, would justify detention and the initiation of deportation proceedings.
