(Adnkronos) – Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani on Wednesday urged “sustained” dialogue with the United States and “robust” security guarantees for Ukraine to achieve “a just and lasting peace” to end the conflict with Russia.
At emergency video summit with European Union counterparts, which Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha also attended, Tajani “reaffirmed the government’s firm support for Ukraine and its people in the face of continued Russian strikes, which in recent hours have again targeted critical energy infrastructure ahead of the winter,” said a foreign ministry statement.
“He also updated his European counterparts on Italy’s latest deliveries to Ukraine, particularly in the energy sector, the statement added.
Tajani “reiterated Italy’s commitment to a just and lasting peace and underlined the importance of sustained transatlantic dialogue”, the statement continued.
Tajani also “stressed the need to define a security architecture capable of safeguarding the future of Ukraine and Europe, supported by robust and credible guarantees along the lines of those proposed by Italy,” the statement noted.
“EU foreign ministers agreed on the importance of maintaining strong pressure on Moscow in order to create the conditions for the start of (peace) negotiations,” said the statement.
Wednesday’s video summit “forms part of a broader network of engagements on Ukraine, in which Italy remains at the forefront of efforts in support of peace,” the statement added.
The summit was convened by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas to review a modified US-backed peace deal framework, which Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday they supported, while cautioning that the thorniest issues including territorial concessions needed to be fixed at a possible meeting between Trump and Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky.
