Takaichi like Trump, launches her Doge for budget cuts

25 Novembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Japan has launched its own version of the American government efficiency commission, just as news arrives – almost simultaneously – from the United States that the Doge wanted by Donald Trump and Elon Musk would have been dissolved months in advance. In this scenario, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s government seeks to reassure public opinion about the maxi stimulus plan of 117 billion euros: a key element of the coalition agreement between the Liberal Democratic Party and the Innovation Party (Ishin), the new body is expected to become fully operational next year, with visible effects on the budget starting from the fiscal year that will begin in April 2027.

“In times like these, budget sustainability is fundamental. It is essential that the public can see that we are constantly working towards this goal,” declared Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, presenting the initiative, emphasizing that there is “great public interest in reducing unnecessary expenses.” The newly formed Office for the Review of Special Fiscal Measures and Subsidies will be composed of 30 government officials and, unlike the controversial American Doge – “silently” dissolved eight months before the end of its mandate – it will not have the task of dismantling bureaucracy, but of evaluating programs deemed to have low political impact.
