(Adnkronos) – Thousands have demonstrated in Syria, in the Alawite-majority coastal area, after recent attacks against the community. According to AFP correspondents, these are the most significant protests ever recorded in the Alawite-majority region since the end of the Assad era last December. Since then, the community, the same as Bashar al-Assad’s, has been targeted by attacks, and hundreds of people were killed in March.
“The Syrian people are one,” was one of the slogans brought to the square in Lattakia, where security forces were deployed, but no interventions by the mobilized units were reported. Demonstrations also took place in Tartus and Jable, where hundreds took to the streets in the name of “federalism” and “the liberation of prisoners.” AFP reports clashes in Jableh between demonstrators and participants in a counter-demonstration by supporters of the authorities and states that shots were heard in the city. Some people were slightly injured.
The protests come after a call on social media by the Supreme Alawite Islamic Council in Syria and abroad following the latest violence against the community in the central city of Homs. According to the Observatory, there were 42 demonstrations today.
