(Adnkronos) – Iran has publicly hanged a man after finding him guilty of raping two women in the northern province of Semnan. Tehran’s judiciary stated that the execution took place in the city of Bastam after the Supreme Court upheld the sentence. The head of the provincial judiciary, Mohammad Akbari, explained to Mizan Online that the sentence was “confirmed and executed after careful examination by the Supreme Court”.
The provincial authority stated that the man “deceived two women and committed rape with force and coercion,” adding that he resorted to “intimidation and threats” to instill fear of reputational damage in the victims.
According to human rights groups including Amnesty International, the Islamic republic, which executes most convicts by hanging, is the second country in the world by number of executions after China.
