(Adnkronos) – The majority of Germans are against the idea of Germany taking on a military leadership role in Europe: according to a Forsa public opinion poll commissioned by the Körber Foundation, promoter of a foreign policy forum currently underway in Berlin, 61% of respondents said they were ‘rather unfavorable’ to the possibility of Germany assuming such a role, while 38% said they were favorable. The rejection was much clearer in East Germany, with 75%, compared to 58% in West Germany.
The survey, conducted between September 15 and 26 among 1,503 German citizens eligible to vote, assessed public opinion on key foreign and security policy issues. Germans were divided on the responsibilities the country is called upon to assume in international crises. Overall, 48% supported the need for greater involvement, while 43% said they were inclined towards greater moderation. In West Germany, 51% supported a more active role, while in East Germany only 35%.
If Germany were to decide to strengthen its presence, most respondents would prefer diplomacy over military action. In West Germany, 71% said they were in favor of a greater diplomatic presence, a percentage that rises to 84% in East Germany. Support for greater military participation stood at around 19% in West Germany and 7% in East Germany.
