Libya: Demining essential for citizens’ safety, economic growth – Italy

(Adnkronos) – The removal of landmines in Libya is crucial for the safety of citizens and for prosperity in the conflict-wracked North African country, Italy’s government stated on Monday, underscoring its “concrete commitment” to demining. 

“Italy renews its concrete commitment to supporting demining activities in Libya, a prerequisite for the safety of citizens and for economic development,” the embassy wrote on X (formerly Twitter). 

Italy’s ambassador to Libya, Gianluca Alberini, and the United Nations’ deputy special representative in Libya, Ulrika Richardson, visited the site of the 31 August explosion (at an ammunitions depot) in Misrata, where the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) is a work, the embassy wrote in separate post on X. 

Alberini also visited the national prosthetic limb centre, the post added.  

During his visit, Alberini held talks on cooperation programmes with the mayor of Misrata and a city council delegation and visited a food factory, the embassy posted separately on X. 

Italy has it major economic interests in oil-rich Libya – a former Italian colony – including in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
