Japan GSDF Officer Arrested for Attempted Murder

22 Novembre 2025

Tokyo, Nov. 22 (Jiji Press)–Tokyo police arrested Saturday a 43-year-old Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force member on suspicion of attempted murder in a case in which a woman was stabbed to suffer serious injuries in central Tokyo earlier this month. Held by the Metropolitan Police Department was Lt. Col. Yoichiro Otsu, who belongs to the GSDF’s Camp Asaka in Nerima Ward in the Japanese capital. The suspect denied the allegations against him, according to investigative sources. During voluntary questioning before the arrest, the suspect told police that he had relations with the woman, in her 40s, without revealing that he has a family, the sources said. Otsu said that he broke up with the woman peacefully at her request around June this year. The suspect also said he and the woman came to know each other through social media about nine years ago, adding that he has had no issues with her since they separated. The MPD is investigating his motive of the suspected crime. Otsu, a resident of Nerima, is suspected of causing serious injuries to the woman by stabbing her in the left side and left hand with something like a knife with an intent to kill on the first basement level of a commercial building in the busy Akasaka district in Tokyo’s Minato Ward around 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The woman was at the building to attend a performance at a live music club on the basement level. She was attacked while waiting for the door of the club to be unlocked in front of the facility. Otsu told investigators that he was taking care of his work clothes and doing other things at Camp Asaka from 6 a.m. to around noon that day and that he therefore did not leave his workplace. He also said he did not go to Akasaka, claiming that he was staying at home after returning from his workplace. Security camera footage showed Otsu leaving Camp Asaka around 6:30 a.m. Sunday and traveling about 20 kilometers to the site of the incident by bicycle before returning to the camp shortly after noon. Footage from security cameras installed around the crime scene showed Otsu loitering around areas near the site from around 8 a.m. and watching people entering and leaving the building in question. As soon as the woman went down to the basement level, he followed her into the building and fled the scene about 30 seconds later. The police raided Otsu’s home and Camp Asaka, and confiscated his bicycle and clothes as well as a knife. The suspect changed his shoes and put on gloves before the incident, and changed his jacket and shoes while he was on the run, according to investigators. The police therefore believe that the attack was premeditated. Naoyuki Abo, chief of the first facilities battalion at Camp Asaka, said, “We pray for the recovery of the victim, and will cooperate fully with police investigations and take strict action over the incident based on facts.” Otsu, who has been working for the GSDF for 25 years, is in charge of managing equipment used in training and drills at Camp Asaka, such as hydraulic excavators, according to sources including the GSDF. He continued to work normally even after the incident. He joined the GSDF in 2000. After receiving training for new GSDF members at Camp Takeyama in the city of Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, adjacent to Tokyo, Otsu was deployed to work in areas including Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, and the northeastern prefecture of Aomori. Otsu was transferred to the first facilities battalion at Camp Asaka in March 2024. There were no issues with his work attitude, the sources said. He was living in a house about 2 km from the camp with his wife and three children, according to neighbors. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
