(Adnkronos) – The Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg, scene of an attack last year, will finally open on Thursday as planned. The organizer – it was announced – has received the necessary authorization from the authorities of Saxony-Anhalt, in eastern Germany, after several inspections carried out in recent days. Until the last minute, for security reasons, it was unclear whether the market would receive official authorization.
On December 20 last year, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor crashed into the crowd gathered at the market in a rented car, killing six people and injuring more than 300. The trial against the man is currently underway at the Regional Court of Magdeburg.
Magdeburg’s mayor, Simone Borris, stated that “in recent days, all parties involved have worked hard with the common goal of making the organization of the Christmas Market possible”.
