(Adnkronos) – At least 45 Indian Muslim pilgrims died while returning from Mecca this morning, after the bus they were traveling on had an accident, colliding with a tanker truck near the Saudi city of Medina. The police chief of the Indian city of Hyderabad, from which most of the victims came, confirmed the death of 45 of the 46 people traveling on the vehicle, according to The Indian Express newspaper.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the incident and informed that the embassy in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and the consulate in Jeddah are offering all possible assistance. “I am deeply saddened by the accident in Medina involving Indian citizens – he wrote on X – My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of all the injured.”
