Germany, government coalition agrees on conscription process

13 Novembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – The ruling coalition parties in Germany have agreed on the establishment of a nationwide conscription process and troop strengthening objectives as part of a new voluntary military service model. This was anticipated by Dpa.

If voluntary enlistment proves insufficient in terms of numbers, the plan would allow parliament to resort to compulsory military service, with a formula whereby candidates could be called upon to fill the ranks randomly.

The parties of the German government coalition, composed of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservative bloc and the center-left Social Democrats, struggled to reach an agreement on key aspects, including the mechanisms to be applied if there were not enough volunteers to enlist in the Bundeswehr, the German armed forces, to meet an urgent need.
