(Adnkronos) – Italy is spearheading a drive to “reunify” Europe with the entry of the Western Balkans to the European Union, premier Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday in Rome after the first inter-government summit with Albania.
“We have been among nations leading the way for the EU entry of Balkan countries in what we view as the reunification of Europe rather than enlargement,” Meloni stated.
“Albania is certainly a European nation: it is clearly up to us to aid this path to reunification in the most serious but also the fastest way possible,” Meloni continued.
During Thursday’s summit at Rome’s Villa Doria Pamphili, Meloni and her Albanian counterpart Edi Rama signed an economic cooperation deal and 15 other accords in a raft of sectors from energy to defence, security, migration, infrastructure, the environment, health, innovation and training.
