Italy committed to defending Ukraine’s freedom

(Adnkronos) – Ukraine has Italy’s unwavering support in war with Russia “for freedom and independence, but Rome will not send troops to the embattled former Soviet republic or arms for use on Russian soil, Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday.

‘We must help Ukraine because we defend Ukraine’s freedom and independence,” Tajani told reporters on the sidelines of a governing coalition event in Bari ahead of regional elections in Puglia later this month.

“We are not in favour of war and we will not send soldiers to fight. Moreover, we will not send weapons for potential or actual use on Russian territory,” Tajani went on.

Italy’s government will however “do whatever is necessary, respecting the commitments we have made,” Tajani added.

The government’s 12th military aid package to Ukraine is on the way, defence minister Guido Crosetto said last week as Italy stepped up its calls for a stronger European defence and rapid progress towards a common army.
