Construction of Eni, Petronas biorefinery underway

10 Novembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italian major Eni and Malaysia’s state energy firm Petronas have started building a new biorefinery in Pengerang in the strategically located southeast state of Johor, which will be operational in the second half of 2028, Eni said in a statement on Monday.

The biorefinery, a joint venture between Eni’s biofuels unit Enilive, Petronas and Japan-based Euglena Co. Ltd, will produce sustainable fuels, especially for the Asian market.

The plant will be able to process up to 650,000 tonnes of renewable feedstock annually including from waste materials as used vegetable oils, animal fats and residues from vegetable oil processing according to the statement. It is also designed to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO), and bio-naphtha, the statement added.

“The new biorefinery in Pengerang is a further and relevant step forward towards the achievement of a production capacity over 5 million tonnes per year and over 2 million tones of SAF by 2030, supporting the growing need for more sustainable mobility,” said Enilive’s chief executive, Stefano Ballista.

The Pengerang biorefinery will help speed the decarbonisation of transportation, along with Enilive’s biorefineries that are already operating in Italy and the United States and with new plants under construction in Italy and South Korea, Ballista said.

The biorefinery is being built within the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) in Johor on the tip of the Malay Peninsula – a key location for international shipping routes, the statement noted.
