(Adnkronos) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Taliban government of Afghanistan announces the resumption of services at the Consulate General in Bonn. A statement specifies that consular services can be accessed by booking an online appointment. It is expected, the German agency Dpa clarifies, that passport issuance services will resume shortly.
The Bonn consulate had been closed in September after the mass resignation of diplomats and staff from the previous administration in protest against Germany’s recognition of the diplomats appointed by the Taliban. Hamid Nangialay Kabiri, former interim Consul General in Bonn, in a message disseminated via X on September 29, described a reopening of the diplomatic representation as “a serious threat to the security of sensitive documents and information of Afghan citizens.”
Last year, the Afghan ambassador and consul general in Bonn resigned, citing difficulties in providing consular services and political pressure. Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, Germany has twice transferred groups of Afghans to Afghanistan with Qatar’s assistance. So far, only Russia has officially recognized the Taliban government in Kabul.
