(Adnkronos) – The United States refused to participate in the Universal Periodic Review of the United Nations Human Rights Council, becoming the second country – after Israel – to boycott the process of evaluating its performance. In Geneva, the seats of the American delegation remained empty during the working group session, which formally noted Washington’s “lack of cooperation.” The United States also did not submit the national report required by the procedure, which is mandatory for all 193 UN members.
In a note, the US mission in Geneva accused the UN of “pretending to care about human rights” while “allowing real violators to hide behind its protection,” also denouncing “continuous prejudice towards Israel.” The boycott follows Washington’s withdrawal from the Human Rights Council, decided at the beginning of Donald Trump’s second term.
