Tanzania, disputed vote, over 100 people accused of ‘treason’

(Adnkronos) – Dozens of people are accused of “treason” in Tanzania in connection with their alleged participation in protests triggered by the general elections on October 29. This is according to judicial sources cited by the AFP agency, which states that more than a hundred people accused of having sought to “obstruct” the disputed electoral process have been charged with “treason”. 

According to one of the sources, 138 people have been indicted in court in Dar es Salaam, while another source spoke of cases involving more than a hundred people. According to a document with the charges seen by AFP, most have been targeted because they are suspected of having tried to “obstruct” the electoral process and “threaten executive power”, causing “serious damage to public property”. The disputed and bloody vote saw the confirmation of Samia Suluhu Hassan as president.
