(Adnkronos) – Dozens were injured in an explosion that occurred during Friday prayers in a mosque within a high school complex in Jakarta. Fifty-four people were transported to the hospital, said the head of the Indonesian capital’s police, Asep Edi Suheri, at a press conference, as reported by the BBC. Some were discharged after receiving necessary treatment. According to authorities, at least three people sustained serious injuries.
The nature of the explosion, which occurred around 12:15 local time in the school complex in the Kelapa Gading district, is not yet clear. A police official, the British network reports, confirmed that two firearm-like objects were found at the scene, while images from the Antara agency suggest they could be a machine gun and a pistol.
A minister who was at the scene later told CNN Indonesia that what was captured turned out to be “a toy gun.” A green cartridge belt was also reportedly found at the scene. A schoolboy told the Antara agency that a homemade device was brought into the institution by a student who was often a victim of bullying.
