6 Novembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni has agreed with her Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi to “work towards” a visit to Tokyo in early 2026, Meloni’s office said in a statement.

“Prime minister Giorgia Meloni had a telephone conversation today with Japan’s new premier, Sanae Takaichi, said the statement late on Wednesday.

Meloni congratulated Takaichi on her election as premier on 21 October and “on the fact that the Japanese government is being led by a woman for the first time,” the statement went on.

During the phone talks, Meloni and Takaichi underlined “their shared desire to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, starting with the economic, commercial, cultural, technological and defence sectors,” the statement continued.

The two leaders also agreed to “work towards” a visit by Meloni to Tokyo “in the first few months of next year,” the statement added.

Meloni’s planned visit to Tokyo will come as Italy and Japan mark the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the statement concluded.
