(Adnkronos) – Zohran Mamdani will be New York’s first Muslim mayor. “In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light,” he said in his first speech after the vote and projection data to supporters in Brooklyn. “If anyone can show a Nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave him birth,” added the 34-year-old Mamdani, who spoke of a “new era.”
“We respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the force they fear – he stated in remarks relaunched by CNN – If there is a way to terrorize a despot, it is to dismantle the conditions that allowed him to accumulate power.” In the speech, he also addressed the tycoon directly: “Donald Trump, I know you’re watching, I have four words: ‘turn up the volume’ (raise the volume).”
With 91% of the ballots counted, according to CBS News, Mamdani obtained 50.4% of the votes, ahead of former Democratic governor, Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent and stands just above 41.5% of the preferences. Republican Curtis Sliwa is distant, around 7%. In total, more than two million New York voters cast their ballots.
