(Adnkronos) – A man suspected of wanting to acquire weapons for an attack against Jewish targets in Germany has been arrested in Denmark. The German chief prosecutor announced this, adding that the suspect, an Afghan citizen, was reportedly in contact with a Danish citizen suspected of collecting information on Jewish locations and individuals in Berlin for Iranian intelligence, likely with a view to attacks.
The man will be brought before a judge in Germany to determine whether he should be remanded in custody pending the filing of formal charges after extradition from Denmark. German security authorities have intensified the protection of Jewish and Israeli facilities after the outbreak of the 12-day war between Israel and Iran in June.
Germany is a staunch ally of Israel and has a history of tense relations with Tehran, although it was one of the three main European powers to try to engage Iran in diplomacy over its nuclear program. In October, Germany ordered the closure of all three Iranian consulates in the country in response to the announcement by Tehran’s judiciary of the execution of Iranian-German prisoner Jamshid Sharmahd, a US resident kidnapped in Dubai in 2020 by Iranian security forces. Only the embassy in Berlin remained for the Islamic Republic.
