(Adnkronos) – Peru has announced the breaking of diplomatic relations with Mexico, after the country granted asylum to the former prime minister accused of attempted coup. The Peruvian Foreign Minister, Hugo de Zela, expressed “astonishment and deep regret” after learning that Betssy Chavez had been granted refuge in the Mexican embassy in Lima. “Considering this unfriendly act, the Peruvian government has decided to break diplomatic relations with Mexico,” Zela announced.
Chavez had been arrested in June 2023 for her alleged role in the deposed President Pedro Castillo’s plans to dissolve Parliament. In September, she was released on bail. Peru has also accused Mexico of “repeated instances in which the current and former presidents of that country have interfered in Peru’s internal affairs.” “The truth,” the minister denounced, “is that they have tried to portray the perpetrators of the attempted coup as victims, when in reality Peruvians live and want to continue to live in democracy, as recognized by all countries in the world, with the sole and only exception of Mexico.”
