(Adnkronos) – Envoy to Italy Alexey Paramonov is understood to have been called to the foreign ministry after Russia blamed the partial collapse of an historic tower near Roman Forum Monday on the government “wasting” billions of euros of public funds on military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine instead of maintaining its monuments, Adnkronos has learned.
Paramonov has been summoned to the foreign ministry on Tuesday following the comments made by Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Telegram after the medieval Torre dei Conti crumbled, critically injuring one workman and leaving another trapped.
Rome prosecutors have opened an investigation in the partial collapse of the tower, which was in the process of being restored.
