South Korea, protests in Seoul, ‘No Trump! No China’

(Adnkronos) – “No Trump! No China!”. These were the slogans shouted in Seoul and Gyeongju ahead of tomorrow’s meeting in South Korea between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, both targets of the protests, albeit for different reasons. Near the United States embassy in the capital and in the city hosting the Apec summit, a few hundred demonstrators gathered to protest Trump’s tariff policy – while the trade agreement between the two countries was being announced – with signs reading “No to kings, Trump is not welcome”.

The opposition, among other things, does not forgive the American president for what happened last month at a Hyundai plant in Georgia, where 300 South Korean workers were stopped during a raid against illegal immigration and then sent home.

And still in the South Korean capital, at the entrance of Gyeongbokgung, the former royal palace, demonstrators protesting against Beijing also took to the streets. “No China, out with the Communist Party,” read one of the banners. This highlights the increasingly strong anti-Chinese sentiment in South Korea, also fueled by frequent incursions by Beijing’s Navy into the Yellow Sea.
