(Adnkronos) – “We are ready to do it in extreme cases, but for now we have stabilized the situation this way.” Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene stated this during a press conference in Vilnius, answering a question about the possibility that the country might shoot down Russian planes in case of further violations of its airspace.
Last night, two Russian military aircraft, including a Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jet, briefly encroached on Lithuanian airspace for a few seconds. In response, two Spanish Eurofighter jets immediately took off to intercept them.
“The armed forces have shown that they can make difficult decisions in real time. The incident showed that we are prepared,” Ruginiene emphasized. “NATO fighters were promptly alerted and monitored the airspace not only to ensure security but also to send a clear signal: we will not tolerate such provocations,” she added.
