(Adnkronos) – Italy on Friday underlined its appeal for a worldwide ceasefire during the Milano Cortina Olympics from 6-22 February after saying earlier this month it would submit a proposal to the United Nations for a global truce during the event.
“With Milan Cortina, we must also send a message of peace and dialogue. Just recently, we promoted a UN resolution for an Olympic truce, to stop warfare during the games,” Tajani.
Tajani was addressing an event at Milan’s Bocconi University on the upcoming Winter Olympics being hosted by Italy.
“This project that we are all working on together is not only a great sporting opportunity, but a symbol of unity, friendship and hope for Europe,” Tajani said.
Universal truces were called during the Olympic games in ancient Greece, where warring factions agreed to lay down their arms to allow athletes to travel safely travel to and from ancient Olympia.
