(Adnkronos) – It could take between 20 and 30 years to clear the surface of Gaza of unexploded ordnance. This was indicated by the US-based NGO Humanity & Inclusion, describing the Palestinian enclave as a “horrible unmapped minefield”.
“If you consider a complete clearance, it will never happen,” said Nick Orr, an explosive ordnance clearance expert at the NGO, comparing the situation to that of British cities after World War II. “Surface clearance, now, is something that is achievable in a generation, I believe 20 to 30 years,” he added.
According to a database managed by the United Nations, more than 53 people have been killed and hundreds injured by the lethal remnants of the war between Israel and Hamas. For many humanitarian organizations, this is an underestimated toll.
