(Adnkronos) – Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has entered La Santé prison in Paris, where he will serve five years of detention. On the way to the penitentiary, Sarkozy shared a tweet in which he declared himself ”innocent”, speaking of a ”judicial scandal” that involved him and saying ”have no doubt. The truth will triumph”. It is the first time that a former president has been detained in France, but in his tweet, Sarkozy wanted to emphasize that “it is not a former president of the republic who is imprisoned this morning, but an innocent man”.

Speaking of “a path of suffering” he has been enduring “for more than ten years”, Sarkozy wrote on ‘X’ that the investigation into the financing of his presidential campaign was “initiated on the basis of a document whose falsity has now been ascertained”. Sarkozy added that he faces this ordeal “with the unwavering strength” that is his own and said he “feels deep pain for France, which finds itself humiliated by the expression of a revenge that has brought hatred to an unprecedented level”.
