Ishiba Cabinet to Resign En Masse on Tues. Morning

Tokyo, Oct. 20 (Jiji Press)–The cabinet of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will resign en masse at a cabinet meeting scheduled to begin at 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday. Ishiba’s tenure will end on the 386th day, making him the 24th longest-serving of the country’s 36 post-World War II prime ministers. Ishiba narrowly overtook former Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, who was in office for 384 days. The election to pick Ishiba’s successor will be held at a plenary meeting of the House of Representatives from 1 p.m. Tuesday and at a plenary session of the House of Councillors from 1:30 p.m. If no one wins a majority, a runoff election between the top two candidates will take place. If different candidates are picked by each chamber, the result of the election in the Lower House will be prioritized in accordance with the Constitution.
