(Adnkronos) – Combatting migration to the European Union “remains a priority” and legal immigration channels are a key tool to tackle the scourge and boost Italy and the bloc’s economic growth and competitiveness, according to Italy.
“The issue of migration remains a priority,” Tajani told the MED9 summit’s plenary session in Portoroz, Slovenia, which he called “an important forum for strengthening European identity.”
“The fight against illegal immigration must be strengthened, but legal corridors for regular immigration must be better utilised, as they aid the growth and competitiveness of Italy and Europe,” Tajani continued.
“It’s ever-more important to work in partnership with Africa, which is a priority for Italy,” said Tajani, recalling that next week he will travel to Mauritania, Senegal and Niger.
Italy wants to play an increasing role in Africa’s economic development and stability and to be a “bridge” and “reference point” for it with the EU, Tajani told the MED Dialogues conference in Naples last week.
In January 2024, Italy unveiled its 5.5 billion euro Mattei Plan to spur Africa’s growth through ‘non-predatory’ partnerships in a raft of sectors including energy, with the aim of curbing illegal immigration and becoming a hub to transport gas from Africa to the EU.
