(Adnkronos) – Italian companies with renowned expertise in rebuilding after catastrophes like earthquakes are “ready” to reconstruct Gaza, but will only be able to do so if security is guaranteed in the war-flattened coastal strip, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday.
‘Gaza has been razed to the ground. In Italy, there are many companies with expertise in reconstruction after disasters such as earthquakes,” Tajani said at the Med Dialogues conference taking place in Naples.
“You only have to think of the earthquakes in L’Aquila (in the Abruzzo region in 2009), which was destroyed, or those in Campania and in central Italy,” he said.
“There are talented companies that are ready, but if we want to work on reconstruction, we must guarantee security,” Tajani went on.
Necessary security includes policing and military missions “under the leadership of Arab countries or with a United Nations mandate, Tajani said.
United States president Donald Trump’s peace plan, whose first phase included the Israel-Hamas ceasefire and hostage accord which entered into force last week, says the US will work with Arab and international partners to form a temporary International Stabilisation Force (ISF).
The ISF will immediately deploy in Gaza and will train and provide support to vetted Palestinian police forces in the coastal enclave, under the Trump plan.
