70 Pct Oppose Giving Key Posts to “Slush Fund” Lawmakers: Jiji Poll

16 Ottobre 2025

Tokyo, Oct. 16 (Jiji Press)–A Jiji Press public opinion poll showed Thursday that 71.4 pct of respondents opposed the appointments of Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers involved in the ruling party’s slush fund scandal to key party and government posts, far surpassing the 10.2 pct who backed the appointments. The opinion poll was conducted from Friday through Monday after new LDP leader Sanae Takaichi appointed Koichi Hagiuda, one of the scandal-hit lawmakers, as the party’s executive acting secretary-general. At the center of the slush fund scandal was a now-defunct LDP faction once led by the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Hagiuda was a senior member of the faction. Some in the LDP believe that “slush fund” party members who maintained their parliamentary seats in last year’s House of Representatives election or this July’s House of Councillors election have been forgiven for their involvement. However, Komeito has decided to leave the LDP-led ruling bloc after deeming the LDP’s response to the scandal inadequate. In the Jiji poll, 90.6 pct of respondents who support Komeito opposed the appointments of slush fund LDP lawmakers, while the opposition rate was 58.5 pct among LDP supporters.
