(Adnkronos) – A political figure from one of the most important Sunni blocs was killed in Iraq less than a month before the legislative elections. Safa Hussein Yassin al-Mashhadani, a candidate for the November 11 parliamentary elections, was killed in the last few hours in the Al-Tarmiyah district, north of Baghdad, by the explosion of a device placed under his car. This was reported by the Iraqi agency Ina based on the reconstruction provided by the authorities. Four other people who were in the car were injured.
Al-Mashhadani, a member of the Baghdad provincial council, was a candidate in the November elections with the National Sovereignty Alliance. The Speaker of Parliament, Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, condemned the attack as a “vile terrorist attack.” Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has ordered an investigation.
The Baghdad Provincial Council announced three days of mourning. Al-Mashhadani, they denounced, was “one of the most competent and professional figures.” There are also criticisms of the Ministry of Interior, accused of not ensuring adequate protection.
