(Adnkronos) – There is a “real possibility” that Italy could take part in a peacekeeping force in Gaza, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Friday, noting that the force could include paramilitary Carabinieri police and soldiers.
“It is a real possibility. We have signalled our readiness,” Tajani told reporters in Rome.
“We could send Carabinieri and army troops,” Tajani said.
Italy already has “a small number” of Carabinieri officers deployed in Jericho in the West Bank and at the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, who are “well regarded”, according to Tajani.
United States president Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan to end the Israel-Hamas conflict envisages the immediate deployment of a temporary International Stabilisation Force (ISF) in Gaza, which will be developed by the US, Arab and international partners.
The ISF will train and give support to vetted Palestinian police forces in Gaza, will consult with Jordan and Egypt and will work with Israel and Egypt to help secure borders areas with newly trained Palestinian police, under the Trump plan.
