(Adnkronos) – Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni is invited to “the grand official ceasefire accord signing ceremony” between Israel and Hamas in Egypt on Monday, foreign minister Antonio Tajani stated on Friday.
“On Monday there’s the grand official ceasefire accord signing ceremony and our prime minister has been invited to attend, Egypt’s foreign minister told me yesterday,” Tajani told public broadcaster Rai3’s ReStart programme.
Israel’s government approved US president Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire and hostage release plan, premier Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement early on Friday. Hamas signed up to the plan on Thursday.
The Israeli military says a ceasefire is now in effect after its forces pulled back to parts of Gaza.
Hamas now has 72 hours to release all the Israeli hostages seized by the Palestinian Islamist group during its deadly cross-border raid on 7 October 2023 which prompted Israel’s devastating two-year assault on Gaza.
Hundreds of trucks carrying humanitarian aid will also start entering Gaza in the coming days. UN-backed experts confirmed a famine there in August. Israel imposed a complete blockade of the enclave when Hamas took over in 2007.
