(Adnkronos) – The Parliament of Kyiv, the Verkhovna Rada, has voted to extend the mandate of local authorities, while martial law remains in force in Ukraine. A clear two-thirds majority of parliamentarians voted in favor of the resolution, the Kyiv Parliament announced. According to Ukrinform, there were 308 votes in favor. There are 450 deputies.
Mayors, municipal and regional councilors will remain in office until elections are called after the end of the conflict triggered by Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began three years ago in February, and the lifting of martial law.
According to the Constitution, Ukraine should have organized local elections this month, five years after those of 2020. The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, has held the position since 2014. Presidential elections should have been held in the spring of 2024.
