Up to 150 Palestinian students set to arrive in Italy ‘in coming days’

(Adnkronos) – Between 100 and 150 potential future Palestinian leaders will arrive in Italy “in the coming days” after 39 students and researchers from Gaza landed in Rome on Wednesday, according to foreign minister Antonio Tajani.

“Last night, the first group of Palestinian students arrived and I believe another 100-150 will arrive in the coming days, Tajani told MPs during a briefing on the two-year-old Israel-Gaza war.

“Italy was the first country to establish a corridor for university students with the aim of training the future Palestinian leadership,” Tajani noted.

The 39 students and researchers from the war-wrecked Gaza Strip were among 70 Palestinians who arrived in Rome on Wednesday aboard two flights from the Jordanian capital, Amman, said a foreign ministry statement.

The ‘university corridors’ initiative enables young Palestinian scholarship winners to study in Italy. Over 150 scholarships have been awarded to students from Gaza so far, the statement said.
