(Adnkronos) – A Russian attack on an energy facility in the city of Slavutych, in the Kyiv oblast, caused a blackout lasting several hours yesterday at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. This was reported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy. Power outages were also recorded in the city of Slavutych and in some areas of the neighboring Chernihiv Oblast. The Ministry of Energy also reported an “emergency situation” in several facilities within the Chernobyl plant, adding that, due to power surges, the structure that isolates the destroyed fourth reactor of the nuclear power plant and prevents the release of radioactive materials into the environment, was left without electricity.
The blackout at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant lasted over three hours following Russian attacks, President Volodymyr Zelensky later stated. “The Russians could not ignore that an attack on Slavutych facilities would have such consequences for Chernobyl. And it was a deliberate attack, in which they used more than 20 drones, according to preliminary estimates,” the head of state said. Late yesterday evening, the Ministry of Energy stated that the electricity supply to all facilities at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had been fully restored after the interruption. The ministry added that radiation levels at the site remain within normal limits and do not pose a threat to the population.
