(Adnkronos) – Attacks on the Jewish community are attacks on religious freedom and on the values of tolerance and respect that underpin democracy, Italy said on Wednesday after a deadly car ramming and stabbing at a synagogue in the northwest British city of Manchester.
“I strongly condemn the attack on the #Manchester synagogue. A most serious act directed at the Jewish community on the day of Yom Kippur (the holiest Jewish holiday),” foreign minister Antonio Tajani wrote on X.
“Under attack are the Jewish people along with all of us, along with the value of religious freedom and the principles of tolerance and respect that form the foundation of our democracies,” Tajani continued.
“We must never yield or forget the atrocities of the recent past. Together we must defend peace and freedom. I express my closeness to the families of the victims and to the British Government,” Tajani concluded.
Two local Jewish people and the suspected attacker were killed and several other people were injured in the incident on Wednesday at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in northern Manchester. Police have since said they are treating the incident as a terrorist attack.
