Tokyo, Sept. 29 (Jiji Press)–Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Co. will support the introduction of “on-demand transportation” systems as rural areas in Japan are facing bus and taxi driver shortages due to population declines, Jiji Press learned Monday. On-demand transportation systems allow users to book shared rides by designating their pickup and drop-off locations on their smartphones in advance. The nonlife insurer will team up with a technology company to predict user demand using traffic data from dashboard cameras and artificial intelligence to help local governments and transportation operators find optimal routes. Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance also hopes that the widespread adoption of on-demand transportation systems will reduce traffic accidents involving the elderly. Trials of these systems will start in the cities of Kakegawa and Omaezaki in Shizuoka Prefecture, in October. A similar system has already been introduced in Chino, Nagano Prefecture.
