Washington, Sept. 26 (Jiji Press)–An additional 25 pct U.S. tariff on heavy trucks and parts will apply to imports from Japan, a White House official told Jiji Press Friday. U.S. President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Thursday that he will impose a 25 pct tariff on heavy trucks imported into the country, effective on Wednesday. Japanese heavy trucks and parts will face a 50 pct U.S. tariff, including a 25 pct levy that has already been in place. The impact of the increased tariffs is uncertain as heavy trucks represent a small portion of Japanese exports to the United States. The White House official also said Japanese pharmaceuticals will face a 15 pct U.S. tariff. The comments came after Trump said Thursday that he will impose a 100 pct levy on branded or patented pharmaceuticals. If the United States has agreed not to impose a tariff of over 15 pct on certain goods under a trade deal, the Trump administration will respect it, the White House official said.
