(Adnkronos) – The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan has voted overwhelmingly, with 84 votes in favor out of 90, for its dissolution and the calling of early elections next November 30, an initiative that, according to independent observers, is necessary for President Sadyr Japarov to further consolidate his power.
“It is the first time in the country’s recent history that the deputies alone have decided to dissolve the Parliament in office early,” the official Kabar agency points out. The official reason behind the motion was the overlap, in November 2026, the date of the natural expiry of the legislature, of the legislative vote with that for the presidential elections scheduled just a month and a half later.
The current Parliament was elected in 2021 after the political crisis and violent pro-democracy clashes of the previous year that forced the resignation of then-President Sooronbai Jeenbekov. Japarov is accused of pursuing increasingly authoritarian policies, with tightening controls on the web and the arrest of journalists and opponents. Last June, electoral system reforms were enacted that abolished the proportional system and adopted a first-past-the-post system.
