(Adnkronos) – South Korean President Lee Jae Myung would accept an agreement between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un under which North Korea commits to freezing the production of its nuclear weapons, rather than eliminating them. The head of state told the BBC that North Korea is producing 15-20 more nuclear weapons a year and that a freeze, as a “provisional emergency measure”, would for now be “a feasible and realistic alternative” to denuclearization.
“As long as we don’t give up on the long-term goal of denuclearization, I believe there will be clear advantages in getting North Korea to halt nuclear and missile development,” Lee Jae Myung said. “The question is whether we will persist in unsuccessful attempts towards the ultimate goal of denuclearization or whether we will set ourselves more realistic goals and achieve some of them.”
